How to Escape The Dorter Slums in Final Fantasy Tactics?

Escaping Dorter in FFT

Summary of Escaping The Dorter Slums

For decades, newcomers to Final Fantasy Tactics (and its PSP/Mobile remaster, The War of the Lions) have coasted through the game’s opening maps, only to hit a brick wall in Chapter 1. That wall is The Dorter Slums (or Dorter Trade City).

To escape the Dorter Slums, shift your strategy from blind aggression to calculated positioning. Before the battle, change your squires into Knights for high HP armour, and bring a Black Mage to counter enemy spellcasters. Deploy a Chemist equipped with Phoenix Downs for instant healing.

During combat, split your squad to flank the building and avoid bunching up; keeping units at least two tiles apart completely neutralises the enemy’s devastating area-of-effect spells. Let reckless AI guests absorb the initial wave of aggro, take down the ground-level wizards first, and use the turn order to predict and dodge incoming magic.

Why is the Dorter Slums Difficulty Spike So Significant?

Up until Dorter, the game essentially lets you win by rushing the enemy with squires and chemists. Dorter forces you to actually play tactfully. The map is intentionally designed to punish basic strategies in three specific ways:

The Tyranny of Verticality: The enemy archers start on top of a massive, towering building. In Final Fantasy Tactics, height increases physical attack range and accuracy. They can shoot down at you from relative safety, while your physical units waste turns just trying to climb up to them.

The Introduction of Real Magic: This is the first map that features high-level black magic. The enemy Black Mages have access to second-tier elemental spells (Fire, Thunder, or Blizzard) that hit hard and strike in an AoE (Area of Effect). If your units are bunched together, a single spell can put your entire squad into critical condition.

Algus and Delita’s AI: Your guest characters, Delita and Algus, are controlled by the computer. Their AI is notoriously reckless on this map. They will often charge straight into the crossfire, get knocked out immediately, and leave you severely outnumbered.

To conquer the Dorter Slums, move away from basic Squires and optimise your party composition. The absolute best jobs for this battle are Knights and Black Mages (Wizards).

Knights provide the high HP and heavy armour necessary to absorb brutal, high-ground arrow damage while advancing up the map. A Black Mage lets you fight fire with fire, using long-range elemental spells to aggressively burst down the enemy’s lethal spellcasters. Finally, keep a Chemist in the backline; their instant, guaranteed item execution with Phoenix Downs and Potions keeps your front liners alive without relying on slow magic charge times.

Before committing to any action, press the designated button to view the Active Turn (AT) lineup. If an enemy Wizard is currently chanting a spell, check who they are targeting. If they are targeting one of your units, move that unit next to an enemy unit. When the spell goes off, the enemy Wizard will blow up their own ally.
