Overview of Final fantasy tactics

Originally Released in 1997, Final Fantasy Tactics is often considered the definitive tactical RPG, trading the series’ usual whimsical adventure for a gritty, mature tale of political intrigue and class warfare. Set in the war-torn kingdom of Ivalice, players follow Ramza Beoulve as he navigates a conspiracy that threatens to tear the realm apart.

Final fantasy tactics in the modern era

Despite originally being released over 25 years ago, the game still holds up phenomenally well today. If you want the original experience, that’s always an option. However, Square Enix launched a modern version of the game “Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles” back in September 2025.

This modern retelling of the classic cleans up a lot of the jankiness from the original, and adds some fantastic quality of life changes to FFT. What’s even better, is that the Ivalice Chronicles version actually includes a ported version of the original game, so you’ve got the option of two different experiences of Final Fantasy Tactics.

how to access and play final fantasy tactics

There are several platfroms that allow you to access and play Final Fantasy Tactics across three main categories of hardware:

Modern Consoles and PC

The 2025 high-definition remaster, Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles, is the definitive way to play. It features updated visuals, voice acting, and faster combat speeds.

  • Platforms: PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC (Steam/Steam Deck).

Mobile Devices

The 2007 version of FFT, The War of the Lions, is available on the App Store and Google Play. It includes animated cutscenes and an updated Shakespearean-style translation. It is perfect for tactical gaming on the go, though it lacks the 2025 remaster’s modern “quality of life” features.

Legacy Hardware

For collectors and purists, the game remains playable on its original platforms:

  • PlayStation 1: The 1997 original with the classic (and sometimes clunky) English script.
  • PSP: The original handheld release of The War of the Lions.
